Fighting Fall Frizz: Why We Love the KERASILK Keratin Treatment

Fall in Toronto brings rainy days, damp commutes and, soon enough, dry indoor heat, and hair tends to answer all of it with frizz and flyaways. If you're tired of fighting it every morning, a smoothing treatment can change your whole season.

But "keratin treatment" has become a catch-all for any salon service that smooths frizz, and the formulas behind that name vary widely: in their chemistry, in their results, and in how the service feels in the chair. The KERASILK Keratin Treatment is the one we love. Here's what it does, and how it's different from the rest.

What Kerasilk is

KERASILK is a professional smoothing service from Kao, the same company behind Goldwell. It's designed to turn frizzy, unruly, wavy or curly hair into a smoother, more manageable version of itself for up to five months, depending on your hair type and how you care for it at home.

Its formulas are infused with biomimetic silk, a lab-made, vegan alternative to traditional silk protein, along with shea oil, and they're activated by heat during the service to reshape the hair.

The benefits

  • Frizz control that lasts. Results last up to five months and soften gradually rather than disappearing overnight, so a fall appointment can carry you smoothly through winter.

  • Faster styling. Blow-dry time drops noticeably, and air-dried hair behaves better too.

  • Shine and softness. Smoother hair reflects more light, so it looks glossier and feels softer.

  • Humidity resistance. Hair holds its shape through rainy fall days and damp commutes instead of puffing up the minute you step outside.

  • Little downtime. Many older keratin treatments meant three days without washing, tying up or tucking your hair behind your ears. With Kerasilk you can generally get back to your normal routine right away, and your stylist will confirm the specifics for your service.

How it's different from the rest

It's formaldehyde-free

Many traditional keratin and "Brazilian" smoothing treatments rely on formaldehyde, or ingredients that release it such as methylene glycol, to lock the hair straight. When heated with a flat iron, those formulas can release formaldehyde into the air, and Health Canada warned about high formaldehyde levels in several hair-smoothing solutions as far back as 2010.

Kerasilk's formulas don't contain formaldehyde, and the brand's own testing measured formaldehyde at negligible levels (under 0.1 ppm) when the service is performed as directed. That makes for a more comfortable service, without the eye-stinging formaldehyde fumes older treatments were known for.

It's customizable, not one-strength

Most keratin treatments come in one strength. Kerasilk offers two services, so we can tailor the result to your hair and what you want from it:

  • Control: the stronger option. It reduces frizz, volume and curl for a sleek, smooth result.

  • Refinement: a softer, natural-looking result. It controls frizz and improves manageability while keeping movement and body.

It smooths, it doesn't flatten

Japanese straightening, or thermal reconditioning, permanently restructures the hair. It's poker-straight until it grows out, and then you're left with a visible line between straight lengths and natural regrowth. Kerasilk works differently: it smooths the hair and fades gradually over months, so there's no harsh regrowth line to manage.

Is Kerasilk right for you?

It's a great fit if you:

  • have frizzy, wavy, curly or hard-to-manage hair

  • spend a long time blow-drying and want that time back

  • want smoother hair but still like some natural movement (that's where Refinement shines)

It's probably not the right choice if you want a permanently pin-straight result, or if you want to keep the full volume and definition of your curls.

Planning colour as well? That's no problem. Kerasilk can be done on colour-treated hair, and we'll map out the order and timing of both services at your consultation.
