Why More Women Are Choosing Hair Toppers (and How to Make Yours Look Seamless)

For a long time, extensions and wefts were the go-to answer for anyone wanting more fullness. Today, more and more women are turning to hair toppers instead, and they've been steadily growing in popularity. A well-fitted topper adds volume and coverage exactly where you want it, without the commitment of a full wig or the ongoing upkeep of extensions.

What is a hair topper?

A hair topper is a partial hairpiece that clips into your own hair, usually at the crown or along the part, to add volume and coverage where you want it most. Unlike a wig, it doesn't cover your whole head, so your own hair blends in around it. And unlike extensions or wefts, which are attached lower on the head to add length and fullness, a topper sits on top, right where thinning and flatness tend to show first.

Why toppers are growing in popularity

More women are discovering that a topper solves a problem extensions often can't. A few of the reasons people choose one:

  • Coverage where it counts. If your part is widening or your crown feels thinner than it used to, a topper adds fullness right at the top.

  • Less strain on your own hair. Extensions and wefts rely on your hair to hold them in place day and night. A topper clips in when you want it and comes out at the end of the day.

  • Flexibility. Wear it every day, for special occasions, or only when you want a little extra confidence.

  • No install required. There are no move-up appointments to keep up with.

If you're noticing sudden or unexplained hair loss, it's always worth checking in with your doctor or a dermatologist. A topper can help you feel like yourself in the meantime.

We understand it's personal

Hair systems can be a sensitive subject. Choosing to wear a topper or wig is a personal decision, and finding one that feels right can be an emotional process. We understand that, and we approach every conversation with care and discretion.

At Lovoux, each artist sees one client at a time, so your appointment is private and unhurried. We never share or redistribute the photos or details you send us.

Why so many toppers end up in a drawer

Hair system retailers offer a wide range of options, from different base sizes and lengths to synthetic and human hair. But more often than not, customers are left with a piece that ends up stored in a drawer, because it just doesn't read seamless with their own hair. A topper straight out of the box is made to suit everyone, which means it's rarely made for you. The most common giveaways:

  • The colour is off. It might be too flat, too warm or too ashy, or missing the root and dimension your own hair has.

  • It's too dense. Many pieces come much fuller than the hair around them, and that's often what makes a topper look like a topper.

  • The shape doesn't match your cut. An uncut piece rarely blends with your own length, layers or face-framing.

  • It's lost its softness. A topper doesn't get natural oils from your scalp, so without regular care it can start to look dry or dull.

The good news is that most of these can be fixed.

Wig and topper customization with Christina

Christina offers wig and hair topper customization services to help your piece look and feel like your own hair. Her services include:

  • Colour matching to blend your piece with your own colour, including root and dimension (100% virgin human Remy hair only).

  • Density reduction to thin out a piece that's too full, so it sits naturally with your own hair.

  • Trims and shaping to cut your piece to suit your face and blend with your haircut.

  • Treatments to bring back softness and shine.

  • Routine maintenance to keep your piece looking its best over time.

To book a colour service, you’ll need to first authenticate that your piece is 100% virgin human Remy hair.

Setting the right expectations

There are a few points many retailers won't address at the time of purchase, but should:

  • Processed hair has a limit. Virgin human Remy hair can be coloured, but once hair has been processed, it can only be altered so many times before it hits a threshold.

  • Overdoing it shows. Overprocessing, or over-washing, over-styling and heat-styling, can leave a topper or extensions dry, brittle and frizzy, dull, and prone to tangling, matting and breakage. It can also loosen the knots that hold the hair to the base, which leads to shedding. Because the hair isn't growing from your scalp, it doesn't get your natural oils and can't grow out, so that damage can't be undone.

  • Less is more. We live by it. We encourage you to purchase a topper closest to your desired hair colour, so that any refinements to colour are minor.

  • More frequent wear means a shorter shelf life. The more often you wear your topper, the sooner it will need to be replaced.

Caring for your topper

If you're wearing your topper regularly, we encourage you to wash it only once a month. Between washes, disinfect the lace with a proper lace solution, or by spritzing 70% alcohol on the inside of the lace that lays flat against your own hair and scalp.

How to get started

  1. Submit a new booking request. Start by completing the new booking request form. It gives Christina a sense of your hair history and what you're looking for.

  2. Book a consultation. From there, you'll reserve time for a consultation, either in the studio or over Zoom, to go over your hair system, any pain points, the alterations you're envisioning for your piece and whether they're attainable.

  3. Get your quote. Christina will provide a quote for the completed services, so you know what to expect before any work begins.

A topper should feel like a natural part of you, not something saved for "just in case." If yours isn't living up to that, Christina would love to help.
